Middle School Social Studies
All grades at ECS follow the NC Essential Standards for Social Studies, which move away from the memorization of names and dates and toward a deeper understanding of our world. Through grades 6 and 7, students study world history from the beginning of time to near present day focusing on the role that geography and people played in its development. In 8th grade, students return their focus to the United States and North Carolina’s role in significant moments throughout our nation’s history. Social Studies classes at ECS incorporate a significant amount of reading and writing as students are expected to infer meaning, analyze texts, and support claims with evidence in writing. Public speaking and performances can also be a part of the social studies curriculum. It is important that students leave ECS with historical knowledge but also confident in their ability to participate in civil discourse and address civic concerns.
